Ján Kollár Museum

Ján Kollár Museum in Mošovce - a place where history comes alive

The Ján Kollár Museum in Mošovce is located on the site of the original birthplace of the important Slovak poet and national awakener Ján Kollár. After a devastating municipal fire in 1863, only the granary of the house was preserved, which has served as a memorial room since 1983. In 2009, a replica of the original house was built here, which has been open to the public since August 2010. The museum was created in cooperation with the Municipal Office in Mošovce and the Slovak National Literary Museum in Martin, and the curator of the exposition is PhDr. Jozef Beňovský.

Museum exposition It starts in the original granary, where visitors will see how this space was used in the past - for storing crops such as grain, vegetables and fruit, but also for storing working tools such as wooden pestles or containers for mortars.

In the next part of the exposition, on the right, there is a kitchenette with period drawings of Ján Kollár's family house by Ján Bibza Sr. On the left side there are panels documenting the life of Jan Kollar - from his birth, through his studies to his work as a priest in Lobeda, Germany.
Various editions of his Memories from the younger years of life and publications related to Mošovce.

Another room presents Kollára's literary work, including the first edition of her poetry collection Daughter of Glory of 1824 and 1832, as well as National singing events and works on literary reciprocity. These exhibits document not only his literary heritage, but also his work in Pest between 1819 and 1849.

The last room of the exhibition recalls Kollár's last years in Vienna, his death, burial and the transport of his remains to Prague in 1904. The exhibition is enriched by photographs from 1863, when Ján Kollár's great-granddaughter visited Mošovce during the unveiling of his statue by the sculptor Fraň Štefunk. This room is complemented by period furniture - a richtár table with chairs, a carved town chest from 1862 and a bust by the sculptor Melniczke, which was donated to the museum in 1983 by Kollár's great-granddaughter Ľudmila.

Visitors can see the biography and bibliography of Ján Kollár, as well as later editions of his works and publications about his life and work. The atmosphere of the exhibition is completed by inks by Oľga Kryslová, drawings by Dušan Kuzma, watercolours by Jaroslav Vodrážka and angular drawings by Miroslav Bartoš, which capture the contemporary atmosphere of Mošovce and Turca.
