Roman Catholic Church of St. Barbara - Jazernica

A small village situated in the flat centre of the Turčianska basin will enchant you not only with its peaceful atmosphere, but also with two precious pearls. The natural and historical monuments here form a unique connection that is worth a visit.

On the southern outskirts of the village there is an exceptional spring lake - the most important of its kind in Slovakia. This pond is saturated by groundwater of the river Turiec and its banks are lined with marshy vegetation such as sedges, rushes, alders and willows. The site has been a protected area since 1975, which only emphasises its importance and beauty. For lovers of nature and tranquillity, this place is an ideal destination for a walk.

Right in the centre of the village stands the Roman Catholic church of St. Barbara, built at the beginning of the 15th century. This simple one-nave building is a National Cultural Monument, which will win you over with its historical value and preserved Gothic charm.

Interesting is the six-part Gothic rib vault of the chancel and the oldest preserved truss in the region Turiec, which dates from 1507 - 1508. The church is also famous for its late Gothic winged altar of St. Anne of Samothrace and St. Barbara from 1517. This altar is a unique work combining indigenous wooden sculptures with panel paintings from the works of the German Danube region.

Although some elements of the altar were unfortunately stolen, such as the wooden sculptures of St. Anne with the child in the arms of St. Mary and two statuettes from the wing altar, the interior of the church also hides other historical treasures, such as early Renaissance murals from the 16th century and inscriptions or drawings from the modern period.

In 1517 the church was rebuilt, and further modifications followed around 1730. A wooden emporium was placed in the nave area, expanding the capacity of the church. Nevertheless, it retains its original form and late Gothic features, including the cruciform two-part windows on the south wall.

The Church of St. Barbara is a National Cultural Monument.
