Church of St. Cosmas and Damian in Abramova

Roman Catholic Church of St. Cosmas and Damian

The Church of St. Cosmas and Damian is a picturesque example of early Gothic architecture in Slovakia. It is located on an elevation in the area of the cemetery outside the village of Abramová in the historical region Turiec, where it forms a distinctive landscape landmark. The church is one of the most photographed in the entire region.

Historical context

The church was built at the end of the 13th century. Its original form included a single-nave space with a square presbytery, vaulted with a cross-ribbed vault, and a sacristy on the north side. It is first mentioned in written records in 1330 and 1375. In the 17th century it underwent a reconstruction which added new elements. In 1927, a brick tower was added to the western part of the church, replacing the original wooden one. Next to the church there is a cemetery with several peasants' tombs and the Országhs' mausoleum. The church is not only a historical but also an artistic landmark of the whole surrounding area.

Since 1963 the church has been a national cultural monument.
