The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne and Joachim in Horná Štuna is one of the important historical and cultural monuments of the region. Built in 1650 on the site of an older wooden church, its history is inextricably linked to the rich history of the village and the local community.
History and architecture
The original church, dedicated to the parents of the Virgin Mary - St. Anne and St. Joachim, replaced the wooden church of the Holy Trinity, mentioned as early as 1620. The dominant tower dates back to 1657 and was gradually modified - in 1673 it acquired its present form.
The church is built in the Renaissance style. The three-nave building with a sanctuary topped with a triangular cap and a fancy tower creates a harmonious whole. On the left side of the sanctuary there is a sacristy, on the right side aisle there is a newer entrance hall.
The interior of the church is adorned with artistic decoration, of which the main altar, the side altars and the pulpit, created in 1901 by the Tyrolean master Runggaldier, are an important part. The statues and sculptures date from an earlier period, the 18th century. The altar of the Virgin Mary is the work of the famous Moravian carver Břetislav Kafka.
Bells and other attractions
In the church tower there are four bells cast in 1928, which replaced the bells that were damaged during the First World War and destroyed by fire in 1927. The church has been renovated several times - the pavement and pews have been replaced, the painting has been restored, the plastering and roofing have been modified.
Around the church there was originally a cemetery surrounded by a wall, part of which has been preserved to this day. The church is situated approximately in the centre of the village at an altitude of 648 m.
Cultural significance
The Church of St. Anna and Joachim is registered as a cultural monument of Slovakia and represents an important symbol of the historical identity of Horna Štubna. Its rich history, artistic value and architectural beauty attract not only the faithful, but also tourists and history lovers.
