Discover Sklabiňa Castle: the jewel of the Turčianska basin
In the beautiful countryside at the foot of Veľká Fatra is the centuries-old seat of the former Turčianska Stolica - Sklabiňa Castle. Although today it stands as a silent and majestic ruin, it still has the power to enchant visitors with its atmosphere and history.
Many castles boast that they can be seen from afar and dominate the landscape. Sklabiňa is different. Passing through the Turčianska basin, for example, in the direction from Martin to Sklabine, you look for it in vain with your eyes. The castle is hidden in the outcrops of Veľká Fatra and is only revealed when you are in close proximity to it. It is as if its location hides its historical secrets from us.
Although Sklabiňa Castle is hidden, its highest points offer a breathtaking view. On one side you can see Katova skala and on the other side there are the peaks of Mala Fatra, such as Martinské hole, Malý Kriváň, Veľký Kriváň and Chleb. The whole Turiec is below you like in the palm of your hand - just as the mighty castle lords used to observe it, so that they didn't miss anything.
The history of the castle is as mysterious as its location. The written history of Turca would not be complete without this castle. Today, the Donjon Civic Association, the new owner of the castle, is working to restore it and gradually introduce it to you - all visitors.
How to him? Sklabin Castle is the most accessible castle in Turci. You can drive to it by car along the rocky road and park right next to the castle. If you like short walks, you can walk from the main road across the meadow - the walk takes about 10 minutes. From the village of Sklabinský Podzámok, the walk is slightly longer, about 15 minutes.
