Labyrinth of the world

25. May 2023 - 22. October 2023

Timeless texts by Jan Amos Komenský in a curatorial selection by Jaroslav Anděl, linked with collage illustrations by Miroslav Huptych, accompanied by the rarest editions of Komenský's prints from the 17th - 18th centuries.
The desire for personal and religious freedom, the search for and finding the meaning of life - this was also the life of one of the most outstanding thinkers, humanist, priest, educator and writer Jan Amos Komenský. His literary legacy is very diverse and extensive. He wrote in Latin but also in Czech. And on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of his work Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart, as well as last year's 430th anniversary of his birth, the Slovak National Library, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Slovakia and the Czech Centre Bratislava, has prepared this exhibition. It is inspired by the life of a personality who significantly influenced the direction of science, philosophy and pedagogy not only in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, but also in the context of European history. After all, it is not for nothing that he is known as the "teacher of nations". However, he was also famous for his revolutionary statements "repetition is the mother of wisdom" and "school is a game".

In Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart, the protagonist wanders through a city to which the author has given the form of an allegorical image of the world. The visitor to the exhibition walks through the Labyrinth of the World through selected texts, confronts the symbolic story with the state of today's society and remains impressed by the relevance of Comenius' reflections on human qualities and motivations for their behaviour.
