Greece at the Dawn of History (exhibition of replicas by Ján Hertlík)

19. April 2024 - 28. July 2024

Experience the atmosphere of ancient Greece through replicas of archaeological finds from times past. You will find them at the exhibition Greece at the Dawn of History at the Andrej Kmet Museum.

The author of the exhibition, Ján Hertlík, adapts his replicas using various painting techniques to make them resemble the originals exhibited in museums around the world.

The exhibition presents the period from the Younger Stone Age (Neolithic) to the Bronze Age, i.e. from around 7000 BC to around 1200 BC, when the Mycenaean culture gradually disappeared. Important settlements of this epoch were located in Thessaly, in central Greece, in the Peloponnese and on the eastern coast of the Attica peninsula.

The exhibition continues with a presentation of the Aegean region, the Cyclades and Crete. The Cyclades were famous for their marble sculptures and crafted advanced marble vessels. Exhibition palaces decorated with murals were built on Crete, and precious jewellery, eye-catching statuettes and ceramics of all kinds were created. After the demise of the Minoan civilisation, the Mycenaeans, whose culture was no less advanced and rich, took over the leading role.

The surprising richness of the works of art and the admirable development of production techniques are demonstrated by numerous examples in the form of replicas, which give the exhibition an extraordinary attractiveness.

The author of the exhibition Ján Hertlík is a passionate traveller and collector who has presented his collections at many exhibitions in Slovakia and abroad.
