100 Years of Radio Broadcasting in Czechoslovakia | Museum of Czech Culture in Slovakia

6. June 2024 - 25. October 2024

A century ago, Czechoslovakia was one of the first European countries to have regular radio broadcasts. It was a long time from the first Czechoslovak airwaves before the radio became a part of almost every household, a companion on holidays and a source of information and news. Gradually, it became a witness and often an actor of important historical events.

From the first sentence in the Czechoslovak airwaves, a lot of time passed before the radio receiver became a part of almost every household, a companion of festive moments and a source of information and news. Gradually, it became a witness and often an actor of important historical events. It recalled the vigour of the citizens of the new Czechoslovak Republic, its occupation by the Nazis, the liberation of the republic, the dark period of communism, the Prague Spring, the invasion of Soviet troops in 1968, the Velvet Revolution, the division of the common Czechoslovak state and other events.

Through unique photographs, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the life of Czechoslovak, later Czech Radio, its past and present. The older generation can reminisce, the middle generation can learn, and the young generation can listen to authentic recordings from the broadcasts via QR codes.

In addition to reminders of important contemporary events and events important for radio, the exhibition also presents broadcasting and transmission technology and presents radio not only as an institution with a centuries-old tradition, but also as a modern public service medium.

The exhibition consisting of nineteen pictorial and textual panels was prepared by the Czech Centre in Bratislava.
