When winter asks

15. October 2023 @ 10:00 - 16:00

For our ancestors, autumn was the time of harvest and storage. Get to know the activities that in the past accompanied the processing and storage of crops in the countryside at the When Winter Asks event. It will take place on Sunday 15 October 2023 at the Museum of the Slovak Village. The programme, which will last from 10.00 to 16.00, will include performances by the folklore ensembles Drotár from Dlhý Pole near Žilina and Hradisko from Vrútok and folklore groups from Podhradie and Sklabine. Folk music bands Podhradská muzika from Podhradie and folk music at FS Hradisko will also perform. You will see how cabbage was pressed into a barrel and you will get a guaranteed recipe for sauerkraut from the folklorists from FSk Podhradie, which, together with dried apples and rose hips, was an important source of vitamins in the winter season. The performers from FSk Sklabine will also present other work typical for the autumn season - "budding" beans, cleaning nuts, making a birch broom, and cutting rags needed for weaving carpets. In a joking spirit, the members of FS Hradisko will also demonstrate the customs of digging potatoes.

Ploughing the fields by horse-drawn carriage is an attractive annual experience that you rarely see with your own eyes anymore. The fields will be ploughed at 11.00 and 14.00. There will also be gardening lectures by members of the Vrtoc organisation of the Slovak Union of Gardeners. If you decide to spend the third Sunday in October at the Museum of the Slovak Village, we will show you how to prepare "zemnačne osušky" and other traditional dishes of autumn cuisine, fragrant potatoes and apples baked in the stove, as well as freshly squeezed fruit juice. For the little ones, there is a creative workshop where children can try their hand at weaving on small looms, make potato stamps, poppy and chestnut figurines, rosehip chains or scented bags filled with herbs. For potato lovers, there will be a potato baby eating competition.

Folk-art producers and sellers will be present at the event, and you will be able to refresh yourself in a characterful tavern. At 1.30 p.m. there will be an ev. a. v. services in the church of Rudno.

The organiser reserves the right to change the programme.
