Turiec is a region full of natural treasures and one of the most picturesque regions in Slovakia. Therefore it is often nicknamed as "Little Garden of Turiec". It is located in the north-western part of Slovakia in Turiec Basin through which Turiec River flows. The basin is surrounded by mountain ranges of Veľká Fatra to the east, Malá Fatra to the west and north, and to the south Žiar and Kremnica Mountains. There are three municipalities in the region with a city status - Martin, Turčianske Teplice and Vrútky. In addition to natural assets Turiec also boasts of its national and cultural history. The evidence and monuments can be seen mainly in the heart of the region - in the city of Martin which was law-declared as national cultural centre of Slovaks. Richness of the surrounding countryside provides excellent conditions for sport activities. For lovers of winter sports there are available 3 ski resorts. The region also offers ample options for hiking, cycling, exploring national and folk culture, traditional gastronomy, and relax in the healing spas.
